Much of Ellison’s work was influenced by his experiences in the urban life of Brooklyn, New York and Chicago, Illinois. Although it only lasted 10 weeks, Ellison, using a false identity, became a member of the Barons, a gang heralding from Red Hook, Brooklyn. Ellison explored the complexities of urban life that had been widely ignored in literature as well as sci-fi at that time, and his influence is prominent in the development of the modern Cyber Punk genre.

Ellison was recognized for his achievements in the genre of sci-fi with an amassment of seven Hugos, three Nebulas as well as the title of Grand Master of the Science Fiction Writers of America in 2005.
