Stephen King’s Misery was a widely-acclaimed novel; its film adaptation won Kathy Bates the 1990 Best Actress Oscar for her performance as Annie Wilkes. The plot of Misery drew inspiration from King’s direful experience with the 1984 release of his novel The Eyes of the Dragon. Being an epic fantasy novel without any of King’s typical horror elements, The Eyes of the Dragon was widely rejected by his diehard fanbase.Misery is the story of an author who is held hostage by an obsessive fan who is so upset with the way he wrapped up the storyline of her favorite heroine, that she tortures him until he writes a conclusionary novel that meets her satisfaction. Misery represents how King felt he had become a hostage of horror fiction.
